You may have noticed that when you try to do something different with the golf club the ball responds in a way opposite to that which you hoped or intended. For example, if you want to get the ball to go higher up in the air you might be tempted to try getting the clubface further underneath the ball. The likely effect of such “scooping” is that you contact the ball with the leading blade edge and “skull” the ball across the ground.
In a similar manner, if you want the ball to fly along a lower trajectory the way in which you might be tempted to apply the club upon the ball is quite likely to “sky” the ball. If you regularly slice the ball you might be tempted to aim further to the left (assuming you are right handed) with the result that you produce an ever-bigger and less controllable slice!
A vital element in the production of effective golf shots is to gain a full and detailed understanding of what the clubface is designed to do and how swing planes effect spin upon the golf ball. The most thorough way in which to learn is through experience. It is well worth taking each of your golf clubs out and hitting them in different ways so as to fully appreciate how best to apply them to the golf ball. More importantly, you will also discover what not to attempt when out on the course!

One of the more obvious “opposite reactions” in golf is demonstrated when you try to hit the ball harder. As you no doubt appreciate, hitting a golf ball harder does not equate to hitting the ball further down the fairway. In fact the ball will be unlikely to go as far and will usually travel in an unpredictable and undesired direction, usually resulting in “3 off the Tee” or a dreaded “snowman” on your scorecard.
A relaxed grip and a relaxed swing will usually produce the best shots. Golfers who are tempted to grip harder and hit harder usually discover the error of their erroneous thought processes fairly quickly.
There comes a time in every golfers life when he or she encounters a situation whereby he or she feels a little pressure. When you feel stressed, under pressure or angry your whole body tenses up. This means that your grip becomes tighter and your timing changes. Even if you do not intend it you will find that your rhythm is quicker and you hit the ball harder.
You can see that even your mind can instinctively do the opposite of what you desire when playing golf. You feel the pressure and you consciously want to produce your smoothest and most relaxed swing, and yet your subconscious mind tells your body to tense up, grip harder and swing harder!
It is therefore important to learn ways in which you can counteract this mental effect upon your golf game. You have to learn how to relax and control your hormonal and muscular reactions to pressure or else you will not be capable of producing your best swing under pressure.
In actual fact golf is only a game of opposites when you do not understand these key aspects of the game and do not take the time to create congruence between mind and body.
